On June 29, 2020, China Central Depository & Clearing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “CCDC”) and the Climate Bonds Initiative (hereinafter referred to as “CBI”) held an online press release on the “China Green Bond Market 2019 Research Report” (hereinafter referred to as the “Green Bond Report”).
Liu Fan, vice president of CCDC, delivered an opening speech. Sean Kidney, CEO of CBI, and Shi Yi, Deputy Director of CCDC R&D Center briefed the audience on the status quo of the labelled green bond market, the policy developments of the green bond market, information disclosure indicators of environmental benefits of green bonds, ChinaBond green bond indices and policy suggestions on green bond market development. The panel discussion focused on the development direction of China's green bond market under the new green bond support project catalogue, the green bond development opportunities brought by the “new infrastructure” policies, and the green bond development against the backdrop of COVID-19 outbreak, followed by audience's Q&As.
In 2019, China issued 386.2 billion yuan of green bonds, and the total amount of labeled green bonds issued by China ranked first in the world. The year also saw some new developments in the types of green bond issuers in China, and the total amount of green bond issuance by non-financial enterprises increased by 54% compared with 2018. In the next five years, a total of 865.5 billion yuan of green bonds will come due, accounting for 88% of the current outstanding green bonds. This means a great potential of the Chinese market to refinance through green bonds issuance in the next few years.
As a core financial infrastructure of the nation, CCDC actively advocates the concept of green development and vigorously participates in the construction of the green bond market. This online release will further enhance the related parties’ understanding of China’s green bond market, facilitate cooperation between China and overseas parties in the field of green bonds, promote the use of ChinaBond Green Bond Indices Series, and contribute to the discussion on the development of China's green bond market.
